Kefalonia For The "Hand"

"Maano" hand, this is the end?

P.S:
Ambient funk, psykedelic chill, light techno...
Boh, per me è solo e semplicemente House Music.

This summer I wanted to take off a whim and give a jolt to my existence, indeed, more than want, i needed to do it, because at that time I had to play my best alternative.
In February I had turned 40, and you want that it is a round number and a symbolic milestone, but more important was the fact that between the summer 2015 and the beginning of 2016 there have been several changes in my life.
Things happen whether you like it or not and it is better to prepare themselves in the best possible way to all the reshuffling that fate has served you on the table of life.

I mean, what could I invent this time?
I needed a change air, and that was the priority, I also wanted to check whether my passions could still work, if that passion was still a market, one development, or if it was already inexorably changed the whole scenery.

As anticipated, in March the card in my hand was to take shacks and puppets (so records and turntables in this case) and go to Kefalonia, Greek island that over the past five years I had chosen to spend the summer holidays.
A spectacular place but much less frequented by young people in search of adventures to bars and nightclubs such Mykonos or Santorini, rather an island for couples of fresh lovers or families looking for tranquility, wild nature in certain points which in any case provides a quality tourism, destination for mature people of all budgets.

In contrast to 2004, where for make the season in Ibiza I had a treasure to spend a quiet period in search of situations to play, this time, net of shipping equipment and about 400 vinyls and in my pocket only 180 EUR, collected with many difficulties ... the first problem was that i chose to get to Kefalonia in early May, when the weather is still a cold dancer, with very few tourists and last but not least many facilities closed.

Arrival and i go to the north of the island where for a couple of nights I come hosted by an Italian resident where he owns a restaurant, and he tells me that my idea of working as an underground DJ in a place like that is difficult to pursue and I find out how difficult it had to do with the local mentality to the original ideas formulated by Italian adventurers.
Thank him for hospitality and I go in Sami, one of the largest boroughs and central enough to be able to move anywhere.
Was the initial plan, my contacts I had met them there in previous years, in that beach there is a club on the beach suitable for what I wanted to propose, vinyl DJ set from the afternoon onwards until closing, a progression on a refined atmosphere addressed to a demanding, I wanted to create a cult situation.

I was motivated and in a fabulous place but lonely like a dog, and without speaking greek, of course, I was leaning from the member of the beach club where I played and who found me a temporary room until the opening of the season.
I had a thousand ideas, bags full of fantastic records and I thought that arriving before the opening of the season was necessary in order to make group, make good mood and organize the details of what we would do afterwards.
But things never going in the direction imagined and as anticipated, having little money in your pocket and with the bar and the beach on the renovation i knew immediately that it would be difficult, in fact, the money ran out quickly and from there opened the real adventure.
I met people who would help me especially morally for overcome those endless weeks in waiting for the job.
Being without money increases sensitivity and the degree of attention to all the details that life offers you.

May was a pure survival with really tough days, but once past the road was then all downhill, with new friends, people deep and true and finally the arrival of June with its succession of tourists, mixing records one day yes and one no in a beach of dream would come true as it was in my goals.
The nickname that was attributed to me was "Maano" (Manuel), which was simple and ingenious, and seen the result might also sound like  Hand or "End" like the sound English.

The rest of the season was business as usual but from a privileged perspective, having lived the season not as a tourist but almost as native, i have discovered more deeply the secrets and the local people, hidden places, occasions, opportunities, strengths and defects of the greek system and western etc. etc..
The summer then is summer, with its climate of promises and illusions, special moments and more, normal days, coming and going of tourists looking for something or nothing at all, characters from movies and other comedy of ' horrid, background music with international salsa, colors and Mediterranean flavors and a thin line of madness that this island has in the DNA, and that reminds me so much my city of birth.

A reflection on the state of the current DJing:
Definitely we're at sunset time, times have changed, so it's just over.
A good vinyl still sounds good, and only the most famous DJs are playing digital music with strong result, the rest of the digital dj is a torture for the ears.
Of course I had the positive feedback from several customers of the beach and in other places where I played, but I have to say that now the search underground and quality only affects the generation like mine and the previous one
Old stuff in short, like vinyl, a lot of photos, and it seemed at times to be a panda at the zoo, a specimen endangered, and with young people lost in their smartphone living and try other things make me think that at 40 years I no longer have the ability to intercept and anticipate, then to propose that young people are looking and I can and should think about doing another from now.
I think I have achieved inner peace about the clubs and DJing culture, and in my 40 years I can not pretend not to see what is around us and I do not talk about music.
"Maano" hand, this is the end?

P.S:
Below there are live recordings in the afternoons of the many that I have played..
Every day I played differently and I chose these sets because it summarizes in a contemporary music where we arrived today.
Ambient funk, psykedelic chill, light techno ...
Boh, for me it's just simply House MUSIC.
